Who Are YOU?

Some years ago, precisely in May 2010, I was at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, waiting to board my Delta flight to Lagos. The flight was scheduled to leave by midnight and I had about three hours waiting time. So, I decided to take a walk around the airport. While strolling I came across a bookstore and decided to see what they had. Of all the books that I saw displayed on the shelf, one stood out to be daring and audacious by its title. I tried to ignore the book but I couldn’t. Then I reached out for it. The book is titled, Who Are You? According to the author, Stedman Graham, “Before you decide what you want out of your life, you must first understand who you are, what the influences on your life are, and why you think and act the way you do. Self-awareness is where success begins – it’s difficult to understand the world and how you respond to it until you first know yourself.”
Listen, not knowing who you are puts you at a disadvantage in life. As a matter of fact, the devil will make a mess of you if you don’t know who you are in Christ. The bible tells us in Acts 19:11-16, “Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them. Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying: We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches. Also, there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so. And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you? Then the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.” The book of 1 Peter 3:15 says, “You should be able to answer every man concerning the faith you believe.” Unfortunately, the seven sons of Sceva were unable to give an answer to the faith which they claimed to have believed. As a result, they were given the beating of their life.
Like the seven sons of Sceva, many believers today have become casualties of the devil due to their inability to define who they are in Christ Jesus. The Bible declares in John 1:19-23, “Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him: Who are you? He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed: I am not the Christ. And they asked him: What then? Are you Elijah? He said: I am not. Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No! Then they said to him: Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself? Then he said: I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.” Beloved, we can see from the scripture that John was not confused about himself, and neither did he claim to be who he was not. He knew exactly who he was and his mission here on earth. As such, he was able to give an answer to those who asked him. If I may ask: What do you say about yourself? Who are you? In life, if you do not know who you’re, you will be tossed like a dice. Yes, others will suggest to you who you’re, and society will shape your life.
Hear me, Satan weighs each and every one of us. He knows when you’re like a deflated tyre, an empty barrel, and a noise maker without substance. You dare not confront him in your state of ignorance. The Lord said in Hosea 4:6, “For my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” To live a fulfilled life, your choice of career, job, wife or husband, church to attend, and everything you do must be anchored and influenced by the knowledge of who you are based on what God has mapped out and ordained for your life. If not, you operate as a square peg trying to fit into a round hole. There are some things you must understand about knowing who you are. When you know who you are, you know who you are not, you know why you exist, you know your ability, you know where you should be in life, you know your authority and rights in Christ, you don’t get stuck or confused in life, you know your source of being, you cannot be easily deceived, you become an envy of your generation, and you make the right choices in life.
Now, how do you discover yourself? Daniel 11:32 declares, “But the people who know their God shall be strong, and will do great exploits” (Daniel 11:32). The knowledge of who you’re is informed by your knowledge of God. Do you know your God? The Lord said, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). “For in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Your life can only be defined in Christ Jesus. Why? Jesus said in John 15:5, “Without Me you can do nothing.” In other words, you can only find your true identity in Him. Therefore, do not be ignorant of the devices of the devil, lest he takes advantage of you (2 Corinthians 2:11). The book of 1 Peter 2:9 says, “You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Remember, God is light, and in Him no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). And “In His light we see light” (Psalm 36:9). Outside of God’s light, you’re in complete darkness. You can never know who you are if you’re in the dark. Jesus said, “I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life” (John 8:12). Have you given your life to Christ? If not, do so today and your true identity will be unveiled to you, and your life will take a new turn. Hallelujah! Have a Blessed and Fantastic Week. With love, Elvis!
