Life in the Spirit

Beloved, let me emphatically declare to you that you are first a spirit before a physical being in the flesh. “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being” (Genesis 2:7). In other words, man is a spirit being living in the physical body. And for you and I to connect with God, we must first understand our nature, and the standpoint upon which we can worship and fellowship with God. The Bible declares in John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and they that worship Him must worship him in spirit and in truth.” This scripture made it clear who God is as Spirit. It also emphasized how those who worship Him should do so. As a matter of fact, those who worship Him “Must” (not may) worship Him in spirit. You are created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26-28). Therefore, “As He is, so are we in this world” (1 John 4:17).
Really, the lack of understanding of this basic truth has brought a great deal of disconnection between God and man. You can never connect with God by the flesh. It must be by the spirit. “So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 5:8). Apostle John had a rare encounter with God that eternally changed the course of his worship and service to God. He declares in Revelation 4:1-2, “After this I looked, and, behold, a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me; which said, Come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter. And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.” Hallelujah! Listen, in this notable encounter that Apostle John had, his flesh immediately gave way for the spirit to take over. He said, “Immediately I was in the spirit”. Afterwards, he began to see what his natural eyes could not see. With this experience, Apostle John was able to document the book of Revelation that we read today. Yes, he saw the end of times through the eyes of the spirit.
Today, many are spiritually dead. They’re more alive in the flesh than in the spirit. Hear me, you may appear very big in the physical, with 6-pack muscles and biceps. But if you’re a dwarf in the spirit, the devil will make a mess of you. No wonder you scarcely see the power of God in our churches today. Does it not sound an alarm when some ministers of the gospel seek for powers from voodoo, rather from the All-Powerful God? As a result, they get themselves enmeshed and entangled by all kinds of demonic activities (1 Samuel 28:3-9). The question is why? It is because they have chosen not to live by the Spirit of God where all powers dwell. Romans 8:12-14 declares, “Brethren, we are debtors – not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” You’re not a son of God when you start seeking powers outside of God. You’re a servant of God when you’re led by His Spirit.
Beloved, the easiest way to become God’s advertisement to humanity is to live a life in the spirit, not in the flesh. When you do so, you don’t seek to “blow” or pursue “fame” as we can see many doing today. You don’t seek to be famous when you’re a son of God. It comes naturally by virtue of our notable works and who we’re in Christ Jesus (Acts 3:1-16). Therefore, it should not be our primary focus. Luke 4:14-15 declares, “Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and His fame went out through all the surrounding region. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.” Jesus was famous, but He did not lose focus of His primary assignment to teach, preach, and to face the cross. Today, the opposite seems to be the case. Jesus declares to us in Matthew 6:33, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” What does it mean to seek first the kingdom of God?
Apostle Paul gives us a clue by saying: “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you are dead, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:1-3). Hear me, you cannot connect with the things that are above when you’re still holding on to the flesh. You must crucify the flesh. Yes, the flesh must die, if you’re to live in the spirit. If I may ask: How are you investing your life in the spirit? Do you really know who you are? Do you want to live and die in the flesh? Jesus declares in John 6:63, “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing.” Apostle Paul caught that revelation and said, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me” (Galatians 2:20). Yes, he became dead to the flesh, and alive to the spirit (Romans 8:5).
Now, are you ready to be dead to the flesh and become alive to the spirit? The choice is yours. Someone may ask: How then do I begin to live my life in the spirit? To live in the spirit is to allow the Spirit of God to lead and govern your life. James 4:7, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Until you submit, you cannot resist. Submitting to God is total surrender to Him. Meaning, you hands-off, while He takes full control of your life. As such, you put the flesh under subjection while the spirit takes over. Apostle says, “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh…but if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law” (Galatians 5:16;17). “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death” (Romans 8:1-2).
