Friends, greetings in Jesus Name! Today I will be sharing with you on what I title, “Be The Best In What You Do”. There is a plumber that comes to do some work in my house. Each time he fixes a particular thing, you will always call him back to adjust one thing or the other. His job is never complete. There must be an error or mistake to be corrected. Lately, I got tired and decided not to use him again. Luckily, I got one young chap, smart, intelligent, and hardworking. It was my electrician that referred him to me. Look, he did a few plumbing works for me, and I was so impressed and amazed by the level of professionalism he displayed. I just asked myself: What kept me so long, tolerating the quack plumber that kept giving me headache? Really, I spent so much keeping the inexperienced plumber around my house. Proverbs 22:29 says, “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men.” In life, when you are good at what you do, being announced comes naturally. In fact, you don’t have to do the marketing yourself. I studied marketing in the university. And in marketing, there is what we called the “buzz marketing” or “word-of-mouth” marketing. It is a situation where those who have come in contact with your – product or service – take it as a responsibility to tell others about what you do. If I may ask: Going by what I do, can people truly refer you to others?
Listen, the moment you are being tolerated, rather than being celebrated in what you do, then you must conduct self-evaluation to check where you are missing it. For instance, as an artisan, if you do not get a call-back again from where you usually go to work, and when you call them it is usually not being picked or answered, then just know that you have been substituted already. If you are wise, do not get offended, just pick yourself up, upgrade yourself, and then go quietly to where your cause will be celebrated. Aside internal politics and victimization, the system that rejected or sidelined you may not necessarily hate you. It’s just that they have seen a better replacement for you. It’s as simple as that. Like the game of football, there is always a substitute for each player on the field of play. Usually, you see them sitting at the bench waiting for their moment. Once a player in the field starts getting tired or playing off from the instructions of the coach, he will be replaced instantly. It does not matter how popular he is on the club. What’s at stake at that moment is to beat the opponent and win the game. Therefore, anything that may want to jeopardize that victory will be taken out immediately. The same rule applies to organisations. Every employer wants good hands that will help actualize the vision of the company. As an employee, if your employer notices you are lagging in your productivity, like the footballer, you will be replaced. The question is: How are you keeping track in your personal development? In the last two years, how many professional courses have you attended? If none, then you have no right to query why your employer seems to act indifferently towards you.
You see, there are employees every employer fights to keep. These are the ones that negotiates their pay. I call them the star employees. The employer does not get angry if he does not see them at work, because he knows wherever such an employee is, he or she is adding value to the company. I have friend like that, who chooses to work at home at his will. And the employer is ok by it. Why? His impact is being felt on daily basis in the company. Also, I have a brother, who worked with a foremost Oil & Gas company in Nigeria. He made a first class in the university, very smart and intelligent. Really, he has inspired me so much in life. While working with the Oil & Gas company, he was doing so well with them, but was unfulfilled. He felt his talents were being under-utilized. Thus, he decided to resign and switch to the banking system. The MD of the oil company where he worked tried his best to persuade him not to resign. But he insisted he must go, and gave his reasons. At the end, his boss agreed to let him go on one condition. The condition was that, his employment will not be terminated till after six months, even though he has left the company. More so, he will still be receiving his salary for the next 6-months to enable him make up his mind to return back. You know what? This my brother was receiving salary from both ends, until he begged the oil and gas company to terminate his employment so he can face his banking career. What is the bottom line of the story? There is an employee every employer will go the extra-mile to retain. Are you one of them? Or amongst those they easily pencil down to sack when there’s an organisational shake up? The Lord said in Isaiah 62:12, “You shall be a sought after”. Meaning, men will seek after you for your good works. This will be your portion from today in Jesus Name! Have a fantastic week. With love, Elvis!
