Don’t Be Bound By Your Past.
Today, many have become prisoners of their past. They are tied down and rendered incapacitated by their past failures, mistakes, errors, and missed opportunities. Unfortunately, when they examine the trajectory of their lives, the only conclusion they could make of their life is that they’re good for nothing. As a result, they find it so difficult to believe that anything worthy can ever happen or come their way. With this thwarted mindset that’s shaped to accept nothing else other than disappointment, they simply seal their fate. Romans 12:2 tells us, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Yes, “For we have the mind of Christ” (1 Corinthians 2:16). Therefore, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). What kind of mind did Christ possess? A forward-thinking mind, not a backward thinking mentality; A mind that sees possibilities not impossibilities. That’s why in three and half years, what Jesus achieved on earth we’re still making reference to over 2,000 years after He has gone.
Hear me, when you brand yourself as a failure, no one can un-brand you. You see, thoughts are powerful. Napoleon Hill said, “Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve.” If you think your world is crumbling before you, that’s what you’re going to see happening to you. What you think has a hold over your life. “For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7). You cannot rise above your level of thinking. For your life moves in the direction of your most dominant thought. The book of 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 tells us, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down strongholds, casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” As believers in Christ Jesus, we’re enjoined to clamp down on every wicked imagination and bring into captivity any Satanic thought that wants to set us backward.
Never forget, thoughts are Satan’s stronghold. Therefore, stop attracting negative things to your life by what you think. Yes, think rich thoughts, and banish evil thoughts. Listen, your past is past. When you keep rehearsing in your mind the negative experiences of the past, then you’re set for retrogression. Those who allow the ugly experiences of their past to haunt them cannot see clearly the bright future ahead of them. Your future is much greater than your past. What lies ahead of you surpasses what lies behind. No wonder Apostle Paul said, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14). Hallelujah! In life you cannot make any meaningful progress while looking back at the same time. Our lives are meant to be lived forward, not backward. Therefore, leave what is behind you at your back.
The Almighty God knows so well the principle of leaving what’s behind to remain behind. This is why He rebuked the children of Israel when they found themselves looking back at Egypt. Having left Egypt to go to the promised land which the Lord had promised them, the children of Israel kept longing for Egypt. They complained about everything, remembering the cucumbers, melon, and garlic they ate in Egypt; thus, wishing it could have been better for them to die in Egypt than in the desert which they found themselves in. At a crucial point when it appeared all hell has been let loose, “The Lord said to Moses: Why do you cry to Me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward” (Exodus 14:15). What was the Lord trying to pass across to them? Your life in Egypt is over. Stop looking back…face forward. “Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you. Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established” (Proverbs 4:25-26).
Listen, if all your life, all you talk about is the good old days, be rest assured that seeing the good new days will be nearly impossible. As a believer in Christ, whenever the thought of the past comes knocking at your door, with flashes of failures in the past, missed opportunities, or whatever, just raise your voice and tell the devil, my life is in God’s hands. Yes, the Lord holds my future. God knows my tomorrow, and He will cause all things to work together for my good (Romans 8:28). Hallelujah! The Lord declares in Isaiah 43:18-19, “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Therefore, stay focused and do not allow the enemy to cheat you by making you lose sight of what the Lord is doing behind the scenes in your life.
Remember, your past has passed. There is no future in the past. Your future lies ahead of you. You can never see the new when you still hold on to the past. You must let go, and let God. You can’t relive the past again. You have just one choice to make. You either go forward to conquer new grounds or remain grounded to a spot. It’s not your portion to be grounded. Therefore, lay hold to your bright future, and let nothing stop you. Ephesians 4:27 said, “Give no place to the devil.” So, feed on God’s faithfulness (Philippians 4:8). And let His word dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16). In all things, give thanks for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Hallelujah! Now, “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you” (Isaiah 60:1). Have a Blessed and Fantastic Week. With love, Elvis!
