Staying Focused In Life
Friends, greetings in Jesus Name! Today I will be sharing with you what I title, “Staying Focused In Life”. As the saying goes, “If you chase two rabbits at the same time, both are likely to escape”. Meaning, you can do anything but you cannot do everything. If our thoughts and hopes are elsewhere, it is impossible to set our faces steadily toward the work required of us. That reminds me of my early childhood, growing up in the Delta region of Nigeria. It was so great seeing my dad engage in what he loves doing most at his leisure – Hunting! While hunting, my father could aim and hit at anything in the jungle with his gun. In fact, I can still remember roasting some of the meat he brought from hunting. As a good hunter, one of my father’s major weapons was focus. He knew that any slightest distraction could mean missing his target. On one occasion, my father decided to take me along with him to the farm. So, when we got to the farm, my Dad gave me a small portion of the land with a cutlass to clear the weeds while he went hunting. I was about ten years old at this time, and was quite troublesome in the house. Being on holiday, the only way my father thought of reducing my rascality in the house was to get me to go to the farm and work. You know what? I never liked going to the farm. Yes, I detested it.
Now, as a little boy, being left alone working on the farm was scary for me. So, I decided to go look for my Dad in the jungle not knowing exactly where he was. Fortunately, I sighted him squatting, aiming at a “guinea fowl” with his rifle. As a novice, I whispered to my Dad saying, “The bird is about flying away”. My dad turned to look at me, and by the time he turned back to his target, the big bird had flown away. Then I could see the anger on his face. Really, I didn’t need any counsel from anyone on what to do next. I simply ran for my life. Listen, one of the greatest enemies of success in life is distraction. It can come from any angle – people, circumstance or even yourself. But we have a choice to either get distracted or not. While having Jesus as a special guest in their home, Martha was so distracted and busy doing so many things, while her sister Mary, sat at Jesus’ feet listening to the word of God. As far as Martha was concerned, Mary ought to have joined her in the kitchen to fry “dodo and egg” for Jesus. Since she could not bear the absence of her sister, Martha turned to Jesus to lay her complaint.
But Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42). In Philippians 3:13, Apostle Paul echoed emphatically by saying, “This one thing I do”. And in John 9:4, our Lord Jesus said, “I must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” If you observe, both Apostle Paul and Jesus were not only aware of their purpose on earth, but were so focused on fulfilling them. Really, it’s high time you ask yourself some hard questions: Am I staying focused or distracted from doing what I am supposed to do? Am I progressing or retrogressing in life? You see, if you do a thousand things but fail to do that one thing that you were born to do, you won’t fulfill your purpose. Therefore, to get ahead in life, you have to be mentally and spiritually guarded against distraction. Never forget, Stay FOCUSED! Have a Blessed and Fantastic week. With love, Elvis!
