The Fear of God (Cont.)
In Daniel 7:9, the bible refers to God as the “Ancient of Days.” Do you know what that means? It actually signifies the God who existed before time began and whose throne is from everlasting to everlasting. With this in mind, you and I should understand that God is not our mate, and neither is He our contemporary. This truth must sink deeply in our subconscious mind, so it will guide how we perceive and relate with God. Psalm 100:3 says, “It’s God who has made us, and not we ourselves.” Therefore, when the Lord says to you, give me your heart and walk upright before me, then you must take heed and obey His voice. Moses spoke to the congregation saying, “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deuteronomy 10:12). As God’s children, we must revere and fear the Lord, giving Him the honour and glory due to His name. Hallelujah!
The Lord declares in Proverbs 2:1-5, “My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you. So that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord.” Listen, you can’t go far with God if His fear is not in your heart. “For the secret of the Lord is with them that fear him (Psalms 25:24). God has deep secrets to share with those that fear Him and honour Him. But He is restricted to reveal certain things to you when your lifestyle is at variance with His will for your life. The Lord said in 1 Samuel 2:30, “For those who honour Me I will honour, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.” You honour God when you fear Him and obey His commandments.
In Genesis 4, Cain began to harbor jealousy and hatred towards his brother Abel. What began as a simple thought soon became a full-blown murderous ambition to kill his brother. Cain wasn’t ignorant of his evil agenda, which in partnership with Satan, has been hatched and concluded to be executed. Seeing where his evil thought will lead him, God quickly stepped in to warn Cain, just like He keeps warning some of us today when He notices us going astray. But Cain disregarded God’s warning and went ahead to execute his evil agenda by killing his brother. Really, Cain lacked the fear of God in his heart, and as a result became heartless and murder his own brother.
Today we see blatant displays of Cain-like characters all around us, especially amongst believers in the body of Christ. We may not have murdered our fellow brothers physically, but we murder them in our hearts. In recent times, we see all kinds of strange happenings going on in churches. Today we see a pastor arresting a fellow pastor; church members defrauding each other; anger, hatred, jealousy, and all kinds of immoral lifestyles on an alarming increase. We see voodoo practitioners and witch doctors turning to preachers and doing all kinds of magic on the pulpit. Just a few days ago in the US, a popular preacher was shot dead after a bible argument with a lady at a bar. Yet, we keep wondering why God is not showing up in our midst the way we expect. Let’s tell ourselves the truth. As Galatians 6:7 declares, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” The power of God will be evident in your life to the degree of His fear in your heart, obedience to His commands, and your holy lifestyle.
While trying tirelessly to seduce Joseph into committing sexual immorality with her, Joseph said to Potiphar’s wife: “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God” (Genesis 39:9). Listen, until the fear of God returns back to the church, we will not see His glory and power. In those days, Peter stood before the congregation and said to Sapphira, “How is it that you have agreed together with Ananias your husband to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out. Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things. Listen, in the days to come, we cannot afford to play games with God.
In the times we’re living right now, God means business. He is not in a hurry to pour out his spirit. Yes, He’s waiting for a church without spot or wrinkle (Ephesians 5:27). “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him” (2 Chronicles 16:9). “Then the Lord said to Satan: Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil” (Job 1:8). Someone may ask: Bro Elvis, my life is in a mess: I am far from God. My life is not honouring Him. How do I begin to live a life that God considers me as His son or daughter that fears Him? Friends, we will continue from here by next week. Till then, have a blessed and fantastic week. With love, Elvis!
