Hearing & Obeying God’s Voice

Friends, greetings in Jesus Name! Today I will be sharing with you on what I title, “Hearing & Obeying God’s Voice”. What puts a man ahead of others is not physical strength or power. There are many with strength and might but relegated to the valleys of life. Really, what puts a man ahead of others is living by God’s instructions, which only comes by hearing and obeying God’s voice. One thing is to hear, and another is to obey. Some hear but do not obey, while others do not hear at all. Those who do not hear live according to the dictates of their flesh. Meaning, they live by what they think or feel is better for them. For such people, life is about gambling and living by chance. That’s to say, if it works, then great, but if not, so be it. Unfortunately, life isn’t supposed to be lived that way. As God’s creation, we are meant to live purposefully because we are in communion with God.

Prophet Elisha said, according to the word of the Lord, by this time tomorrow shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel (2 Kings 7:1). Why? It’s because the Lord said, and he heard. Just imagine how pathetic it could have been, if Elisha had made such pronouncement by guessing. Isn’t that what we see today, by people who fake what God didn’t say? Today there are many voices seeking to get our attention. Really, we have the voice of our family, friends and well wishers, voices from television, radio and social media. We have also the voice of the devil speaking to our ears, and as well, our own voice. Now, there is a voice greater than all these other voices. It’s the voice of God. It’s ever speaking to us. Unfortunately, this voice of God gets swallowed up by other voices when we pay less attention to it. While speaking to His disciples, Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and the voice of a stranger they will not follow” (John 10:4-5). Meaning, the sheep has developed such a close relationship with their shepherd, that they are able to distinguish their master’s voice from strangers.

In your walk with God over the years, if you cannot confidently say, the Lord told me to do this or that, then you will have to take a break, and re-examine your relationship with the Holy Spirit. It’s dangerous to assume the Lord is speaking and leading you, whereas you are the one leading yourself. The bible said, “the steps of the righteous are ordered by the Lord ” I remember when I was asking the Lord to show me my future wife. Naturally, men are moved by what they see. Like the Lord told prophet Samuel, “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart ” (1Sam). I remember going ahead of the Lord to propose to a certain lady, and the Lord told me, “Son, cut-off this relationship, otherwise you will regret later”. He pointed out few things that were wrong in that relationship. Initially, I was hesitant, but finally made the tough decision to obey. Not long, I realized that was one of the best decision I took. Afterwards, I told the Lord to have His way concerning my choice of a partner. I remember one Sunday morning at church, the pastor said we should hold hands with our neighbour and pray. Then I held hand with someone close to me and prayed. As I left the person, the Lord told me: “Son, you just prayed with your wife”. Then, I looked at the person, she was a young pretty lady sitting beside me.

Trust me, I started making some smart moves towards her from that day, and we became best of friends. Today we are happily married. Really, I have come to realize that hearing clearly from God makes a huge difference. Many are regretting today based on decisions they took that was not ordered by the Lord. Now, how do we hear clearly from the Lord? It’s simple! Just spend time and cultivate a sound relationship with God, studying His word, prayer, and fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Just delight in the Lord with all your heart. Commit your ways to the Lord. Never be in a hurry to take decision over a matter without seeking God’s opinion. The Lord said in 1 Samuel 2:30, “They that honour me, I will honour”. When you recognise God’s authority over your life as your maker, you will always have His support, and will not lack divine revelations. I pray from today, your spiritual ears will be opened. You shall begin to hear clearly from God in all areas of your life in Jesus Name. Have a fulfilled week. With love, Elvis!
