Staying Focused In Life

Friends, greetings in Jesus Name! Today I will be sharing with you on what I title, “Staying Focused In Life”. As the saying goes, “If you chase two rabbits at the same time, both are likely to escape”. Meaning, you can do anything but you cannot do everything. If our thoughts and hopes are elsewhere, it is impossible to set our faces steadily toward the work required of us. That reminds me in my early childhood, growing up in Delta State of Nigeria. It was so great seeing my dad engage in what he loves doing most at his leisure – Hunting! While hunting, my father can aim at and hit anything in the jungle with his gun. In fact, I can still remember roasting some of the meats he brought from hunting. As a good hunter, one of my father’s major weapon was focus. He knew that any slightest distraction could mean missing his target. On one occasion, my father decided to take me along with him to the farm. He then gave me a portion of the farm to clear from weeds while he went hunting. I was about nine years old at this time, and was quite troublesome in the house. Being on holiday, the only way my father thought of reducing my rascality in the house was to get me at work in the farm.

Being a little boy, I was so afraid to be left alone working in the farm. So, I decided to go looking for my dad. When I sighted him, he was about aiming at a “guinea fowl” with his rifle. Being a novice, I whispered to my dad saying, “The bird is about flying away”. My dad turned to look at me, and by the time he turned back to his target, the guinea fowl had flown away. Then he became furious and angry at me for making him lose focus. Listen, one of the greatest enemies of staying focused in life is distraction. It can come from any angle – people, circumstance or even yourself. But we have a choice to either get distracted or not. While having Jesus as a special guest in their home, Martha was so distracted and busy doing so many things, while her sister Mary, sat at Jesus’ feet listening to the word of God. As far as Martha was concerned, Mary ought to have joined her in the kitchen to fry “dodo and egg” for Jesus. Since she could not bear the absence of her sister, Martha turned to Jesus to lay her complaint.

But Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needful, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42). In Philippians 3:13, Apostle Paul echoed emphatically by saying, “This one thing I do”. And in John 9:4, our Lord Jesus said, “I must work the works of Him who sent me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.” If you observe, both Apostle Paul and Jesus were not only aware of their purpose on earth, but were so focused in fulfilling them. Really, it’s high time you asked yourself some hard questions: Am I staying focused or distracted from doing what I am supposed to do? Am I progressing or retrogressing in life? You see, if you do a thousand things but fail to do that one thing that you were born to do, you won’t fulfil purpose. Therefore, to get ahead in life, you have to be mentally trained and spiritually guarded against distraction. Never forget, Stay FOCUSED! Have a fantastic week. With love, Elvis!
