Word Addiction

Friends, greetings in Jesus Name! Today I will be looking at a very interesting topic, “Word Addiction”. Presently, we see people getting addicted to so many things – ranging from cocaine, sex, internet, food, just name it. All these addictions are leading so many to self-destruction, and also impact negatively on the lives of others around them. As a child of God, it is about time you become word addicted. Let’s lay some foundation about what we are talking about. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). We learnt from last week’s devotion that the Almighty God made Himself equal with His word. No wonder He said, “Heaven and earth shall pass away but my word shall never pass away” (Matt.24:35). Why? The word of God is as eternal as God. As we know, the word works wonders. “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword” (Heb.4:12). “Is not my word like a fire, says the LORD, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?” (Jere.23:29). When a man embraces the word of God in his life, he becomes a living wonder to his generation. What separates men of exploits from ordinary men is their adaptability to the word of God in all situations of life. In other words, whatever the word of God says about them or any situation, they latch on to it and believe it. But that doesn’t come so cheaply. A man must apply himself to the study of the word to get acquainted with it.

The Bible says in 2 Tim.2:15, “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” Listen, we all hear of mountain moving faith – it does not come by prayer. Faith comes by practical application of yourself to the word. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Rom.10:17). Faith is the vehicle with which you get answers to your prayer. It facilitates the response of your prayer from God to get the intended result. That is why the Bible says, “The prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up” (James 5:15). Meaning, it is a faith prayer – not faithless prayer – that gives you the answer that you need. Therefore, the truth and revelation you receive from the study of the word gives you the confidence to pray in faith with the hope of an answer. And God knows the importance of His word in your life, and for that reason, He admonishes you to get addicted to it. He said in Joshua 1:8, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” Friends, not reading your Bible as a Christian leave you vulnerable to the devil. Why? If you do not know your right, how can you claim what rightfully belongs to you.

Are you struggling in any area of your life – say finance, relationship, unusual delays, sickness, failure, oppression, etc? Then you need to focus on the word of God to know what it says about that situation. When you do, you will be amazed to see the miracle that awaits you. Have you noticed in recent times, that most people begin the day with social media (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, etc.) than with their Bible? Really, many become sick if they have not lay hands on their gadgets first thing in the morning. The question is why? The devil knows that the day you discover “who you are” and “what God said about you” in the Bible, he is in trouble. So, he does his best to keep you far from studying the word. Have you also observed that the time you want to read the Bible is when that favorable program starts on TV, your phone starts ringing, and distractions of various kinds begin to come up? And even when you summon courage to read the word, it suddenly becomes boring, and it won’t last for more than ten minutes before more interesting stuff comes up. It is the strategy of the enemy playing out well against you – to keep you far from that word you need for that victory.

Today the devil has glued many Christians to their TV Set – watching football, movies, music, and all kinds of entertainment – at the expense of their destiny. The Lord is telling me that so many of you reading this article have not read your Bible in the last one month, and many do not even know where they kept their Bible. Whether you like it or not, you are in a constant battle. The devil is busy throwing arrows against you. A lot of people are falling and getting wounded. You can only stand firm on the word. Ephesians 6:17 says, “Taking the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God”. While on earth, Jesus knew the antics of the devil, and then got himself immunized by the word. No wonder when Satan confronted him, Jesus said to him, “It Is written…”. You can only say “it is written” when you have studied the word. Remember, you can never get enough of the word, and you cannot give what you don’t have. Therefore, become “word addicted” today. With love, Elvis!
