You Cannot Serve God and Mammon

Friends, greetings in Jesus Mighty Name. Today, I will be sharing with you what I title, “You Cannot Serve God and Mammon.” Beloved, today there are many things competing against our affection, worship and attention to God. Really, it’s a battle of supremacy, orchestrated from the pit of hell, and we are at the centre of the battle. God wants your attention, and so does the devil. The devil does not want your attention because he has something good to offer you. No! He seeks to derail and destroy your destiny. John 10:10 says, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Who is the thief here? The Devil! Jesus declared in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”
What is Mammon? Mammon in biblical terms is money or riches often used to describe the debasing influence of material wealth induced by the devil. In the context of today’s message, it is anything that takes God away from your life. Yes, whatsoever that takes away the place of God’s worship is mammon. You cannot claim to serve God and have something else taking his place in your life. No way! You either serve God wholeheartedly or never. He can’t share you with the devil. God wants you completely to himself. Why? He is a jealous God. “For you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” (Exod. 34:14). The Almighty God wants our total loyalty and allegiance to him only. Any trace of disloyalty is tantamount to treason before him, and he will spew you out of his mouth. Yes, it’s that serious. The choice is yours (Deut. 30:19). What’s the choice to make here? To pursue God wholeheartedly and give your full attention to him only.
Proverbs 4:20-22 declares, “My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; For they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” What does it mean to give attention to God? It means to be heedful, attentive, and thoughtful to what God is saying. Listen, you can’t give attention to God if you’re not focused on him. And to keep focused is to stay undistracted. Unfortunately, the devil knows the power of distraction and he’s using it against many believers that refuse to give heed and attention to God’s word. This is the reason why we should live by the spirit so we do not fulfil the unfruitful works of the flesh that derail our relationship with God. The bible says in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
Friends, with the level of distraction facing us today, especially as it relates to the social media and other vices, it can only take self control, backed by the power of the holy spirit, to mitigate the activities of the devil at work. It’s time to declare your full allegiance and exercise your authority in Christ Jesus. Hallelujah. Apostle Paul declared in Romans 6:15-17, “What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered.” What a joy to know that when you and I gave our lives to Christ, we were delivered completely from the power of darkness.
Apostle Paul declared in Colossians 1:10-14, “That you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.” Hallelujah! In Colossians 2:6-7, Apostle Paul went further to declare, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.” Meaning, forward ever and backward never in our walk with God. As you go this week, go with the consciousness that nothing should come between you and your God. For you cannot serve God and Mammon. Have a Blessed and Fantastic Week. With love, Elvis!
